ABOUT THE CERVANTINO

International Cervantino Festival (FIC) is the most important artistic and cultural event in Mexico and Latin America. Because of its consolidation in the international sphere of performing arts, it has earned a special place among the four most important festivals of its kind around the world. In FIC, the music, opera, theatre, dance, the visual arts, literature and the audiovisual media, come together.

FIC’s objectives are to bring together audiences and also strive for their development and creation. The festival prepares its program for new generations and its captive audiences while also offering activities for the spectators that year after year are expecting its program.

Its origins go back to 1953, in Guanajuato, when Enrique Ruelas paid homage to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra by staging his Entremeses. Presenting this approach in public spaces where the community got involved in the project was a wise decision, and it has been done this way for over six decades.

Guanajuato is the city where this great celebration of culture takes place year after year. Founded on 1546, it became one of the most important mining centers of the New Spain, and a key spot for the movement of Independence in Mexico.

Thanks to its historical importance and architectonic beauty, Guanajuato is holder to two distinctions: on 1988 it was acknowledged as World Heritage Site by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); and on 2005 it was appointed as Cervantine Capital of the Americas.
